Mediterranean Courtyard
The owners of this modern townhouse wanted to create a very low maintenance garden as they spent part of the year away in France. The lawn was removed and the whole area paved and gravelled. The paving was laid at an angle across the garden to give the illusion of greater width in this narrow space, and the mellow tones of natural sandstone, blended with golden flint gravel, soften the effect of the hard landscaping. A cherry tree was retained, and a low maintenance gravel garden created by planting through the gravel and the weed suppressant membrane beneath. Herbs, palms, phormiums, grasses and bamboos, along with climbers on trellis panels to break up the fence, green the space but need little work.
