Hilary’s Hill
The levels in this steeply sloping urban garden are re-designed to provide a more practical and usable space with a large dining patio with plenty of space for dining and relaxing in the sun, paved in warm natural sandstone. The brick retaining wall curves gently away from the house, with a curved raised bed outside the conservatory to soften the effect of the wall with planting close to the windows.
Steps lead to the gravel surfaced drying area, and planted border, behind which, a further retaining wall creates a space for a wildlife pond with a gently tumbling cascade. On the next level, a kidney-shaped lawn is surrounded by mixed borders. Timber retaining walls create a long raised bed leading to the top level of the garden – in the centre, a wide timber arch over broad steps leads to and screens the utility area beyond.
